Chris Upfield, Partner

“I offer a sensible and commercial approach to all issues arising on separation, or divorce. All of the advice I give has an inbuilt cost/benefit analysis and I see myself as an adviser more than a lawyer. There are many guidelines but few rules cast in tablets of stone in familylLaw and I believe my 28 years of experience gives added value to my clients in actively resolving their disputes whether adopting the Court process or alternatively in a “no Court” divorce.”

Chris is head of the Family team at Coffin Mew. He joined the firm in 1982 and qualified as a solicitor in 1984, becoming a Partner in the firm in 1987. For the majority of his career Chris has specialised in family law only.

His work now falls into three main categories. Firstly, high net worth matters particularly where there are business assets involved. Secondly, Chris has a national and international practice advising senior Armed Forces personnel upon the particular intricacies of Armed Forces pensions in a divorce context. Thirdly, Chris, as a trained Mediator, heads the firm’s Family Mediation service.

Chris was “recommended” in the 2009 Legal 500 and in the 2010 version was described as “excellent”. He is a member of the Law Society Family Law Panel and like all Coffin Mew family lawyers a member of Resolution which advocates a non-confrontational approach to family matters.

Away from work, Chris is married with three grown-up children. Leisure time is spent enjoyably on the Golf Course or on the rollercoaster ride endured as a longstanding season ticket holder at Portsmouth Football Club.
