Douglas Miller, Associate, F.Inst.L.Ex

Member of the Law Society Clinical Negligence Panel

“If I could not practice clinical negligence I would not want to practice law at all”.  This is a strong statement but I believe that the role of the clinical negligence lawyer is crucial in today’s society.  Through my practice I have had the unfortunate experience of witnessing many distressing instances of negligence all of which were preventable though better practice.  Negligence often causes injury, but in clinical matters the injuries can be catastrophic and often affect families as a whole in addition to an individual.

I am proud of the professional service I deliver and I see it as my duty not only to seek and recover compensation but also deliver answers to the questions that have been left unanswered by medical practitioners.  Often the truth we find is as much a remedy and the much needed compensation that follows an injustice."

Douglas is the team leader of the personal injury and clinical negligence team.  He has practiced clinical negligence law exclusively for 10 of his now impressive 20 years in personal injury litigation.  Having first trained with Coffin Mew in the 1990’s, and having worked with other leading personal injury practices across the south,  he now heads up our strong team of injury litigators fighting for compensation for the victims of preventable accidents and clinical blunders.  He gained membership of the Law Society’s specialist clinical negligence panel at the earliest possible point in his clinical negligence career, and recently was reaccredited again without question.  Douglas is commended in Chambers and Partners Independent Directory for his "flexible, communicative style."

Douglas’ workload is wide and varied, ranging from high value and complex cases through to smaller, but nonetheless important claims. He is an advocate of victims accessing justice and has promoted the virtues of legal aid publicly to fight this cause.

He has particular specific areas of expertise including:

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Misdiagnosis of Childhood diseases
  • Misdiagnosis of Brain injuries
  • shoulder dystocia,
  • bowel surgery,
  • psychiatric claims arising from death of a child/partner,
  • fatal claims for failure to section under Mental Health Act,

Outside of work Douglas has a wide range of interests; he is a father of two; Director of Headway Portsmouth & SE Hampshire; a Volunteer Ranger with Eastleigh Borough Council Countryside Services; and a School Governor (where he is responsible for Special Educational Needs).

He also enjoys canoeing, fly fishing, astronomy and walking as well as playing guitar.
