Malcolm Padgett - Partner
Malcolm trained as a lawyer with one of the major London law firms, qualifying as a solicitor in June 1977. During the following eight years he specialised in consumer credit law, acting for major UK and US banks and finance houses. Arising from this work Malcolm was asked to negotiate deals with providers of payment protection insurance who were, during that period, rapidly expanding their activity in the UK market.
This led to his specialism in payment protection insurance and, in time, the wider regulation and conduct of general insurance and an increasing involvement in sectors of the general insurance market where distribution to the consumer is via corporate partnership, affinity or similar channels.
Between 1977 and 1994 Malcolm was retained as the specialist external legal adviser to Consolidated Insurance Group. In 1984 Malcolm joined Coffin Mew LLP as a partner.
In 1994 he established the Insurance Regulation Department specialising in legal and regulatory issues affecting the whole of the general insurance market. The Department provides services to a large number of insurers, distributors and third party administrators both via subscription products and individual consultancy and legal advice.
Malcolm is a regular speaker at industry and trade association conferences, client forums and in-house seminars. He is regularly consulted by government departments and trade associations for an objective overview of issues affecting the insurance industry.
Malcolm is married, with three children, and his interests outside the office include work as the churchwarden of a village church, music, most sport and a passion for wine!
