INSURANCE REGULATION

"Malcolm Padgett, who heads a specialist Insurance and Business Regulation unit, is recognised as having ‘niche expertise in FSA and insurance matters’."
- Legal 500 Directory 2006

It is quite rare for a firm based outside London to be a predominant adviser to an industry sector, but in the case of the regulation of the marketing of general insurance in retail and lending markets this is a position which Coffin Mew LLP are proud to hold.

The Insurance Regulation Department, headed by Malcolm Padgett, advises major providers of this insurance, and many lenders, retail distributors and third party administrators on legal, regulatory and technical issues affecting the market. The Department provides regulatory monitoring services and publications to clients on a subscription basis and, together with specialist advisers from other teams within Coffin Mew LLP, a full range of legal, commercial and technical support to the sector.

The regulation of general insurance intermediary activity by the Financial Services Authority has led to a considerable increase in the Department’s work and has further raised Malcolm’s profile as a nationally recognised expert and speaker on this issue.

The Department is also responsible for providing technical advice, and support to other departments within the firm, regarding a wide range of other business regulation including that relating to consumer credit, disability discrimination and data protection.
